In a secluded land ruled by mortals, thirteen sidhe warriors form the Sentinel Guard to defend the people from supernatural threats. In an outburst of power that leaves the northern half of her city leveled, her father passes, and the beast vanishes. Amongst the cinders, Asteria is turned in by her best friend.

With the Sentinel Guard at capacity, the King of Blackthorne invokes the Ordeals. As she prepares to fight the Guard, he takes a particular interest in her. Asteria finds herself unable to control her powers and unprepared for her first duel, and King Roderick employs a foreign lord with twin abilities to assist her.

But when Asteria sees Kallan with the Sentinel she met the night of her Transcendence, she becomes wary of his help. As chaos descends and deadly mists sink in, she is left questioning whether to trust the institution she has known her whole life or the strangers she just met.
